The University of Utah has established two phenomenal Fine Arts programs: Marriott School of Dance and the Actor Training Program. Both programs create either dance theater or physical theater. Both experience success and great learning from these productions. As a student in the Modern Dance Program, I intend to bring the two programs together through a collaborative experience with fellow theater and dance students. Through a series of movement labs, research endeavors, interviews, and rehearsals, this project will educate myself, my colleagues involved, and the theater and dance departments. Observations will be made on the effect of movement training and practices in theatrical communication. I will shadow teachers and directors, learning how the collaboration necessary for movement in theater can be applied and taught. At the end of the fall semester, a collaborative and student ran physical theater piece will be created and produced on campus. This will be a student made and inspired production. It will serve as my personal Undergraduate Research Project.
This project will continue its work by adding to the dance and theater worlds through showing the value and success of collaboration. Actors need their bodies to bring complete truth to a story. The body speaks louder than words. This powerful outcome will support the future of collaboration needed in our artistic careers as young creatives. As a performer, I hope this project will help encourage collaborations between my department and the University of Utah theater department. To see that union come together at my home institution will positively impact the College of Fine Arts.
